The launch of Black Feminist Mothering in the 21st Century Literature by Dr. Nicole Carr was an evening that blended scholarship, wellness, and community celebration.

The event was hosted at Dr. Brown’s Art Gallery and created a unique cultural atmosphere where art, literature, and community engagement intersected. Sponsors included the African American Health Disparities (AAHD) group, She So Savvy Social + Photography, Pressed Glow, and the Language, Literature, and Arts (LLA) Department at Texas A&M University–San Antonio.
Guests stepped into a space adorned in shades of pink, setting a joyful and sophisticated tone. Attendees included colleagues, students, family, and friends who gathered to honor Dr. Carr’s achievement. The room was filled with laughter, conversation, and support, making it clear that this was more than just a book launch — it was a celebration of resilience and scholarship.
During her remarks, Dr. Carr shared her writing journey, speaking candidly about the challenges of balancing research, writing, and the publishing process.

“Writing was painful and difficult,” Dr. Carr admitted, reflecting on the emotional weight of her work.
Despite these struggles, she offered encouragement to those pursuing their own goals.
“Keep going and do not stop.”
She also explained that her project grew beyond a personal milestone
“Along my journey I realized I wasn’t just writing the book for myself but for other people. I hope it helps them learn about Toni Morrison’s relationship with other Black women.”

The evening also highlighted wellness and intentional living. Guests enjoyed charcuterie boards with fresh assortments, Pressed Glow juice samples with educational inserts, and complimentary pink Glow Mode journals — a 90-day fitness tracker designed to encourage self-care and accountability.
A networking activity closed out the evening, encouraging attendees to connect with someone new and explore opportunities for collaboration. The exercise sparked meaningful conversations and reflected the broader purpose of the event: to foster both scholarship and community connection.

The program, organized in partnership with AAHD co-chair Zita Powell and community collaborators, was a success. The launch of Black Feminist Mothering in the 21st Century Literature not only celebrated Dr. Carr’s research but also stood as a testament to the importance of perseverance, wellness, and collective support in the academic and local community.
